What is a car that is good for a large dog to be harnessed in? I live in NZ?
I have a large dog and I always harness her in so she is not upset in accident. At my last warrant I was warned that she has ruined the suspension in the back seat. I will need a new car seat soon. I would love to get another car- not new. What do you suggest? It can't be a SUV as she won't be skilful to get in. I do need her to be able to be harnessed for her safety.
You can always take out the seat and put in a padded tenets for her to lay on. She can still be seat belted in and would be a lot more comforable for her. You can set it up so you can exchange it for the seat easily if you need to use it for human passengers.
My Profound Dane rides in the front seat with me in a Ford Ranger Pick-up truck. She wears a seat-belt harness, and I've non-functioning the passenger-side airbag for her. If you get a 2-wheel drive instead of a 4-wheel drive, it should be low enough for your dog to get in and out comfortably, and also there are vehicle ramps that you can buy to facilitate a make up for it easier for your dog to get in and out of the car.
Any rules for my German Shepherd dog riding in the car?
Someome (that I at bottom despise) was getting on me the other day about my German Shepherd dog riding in the passenger seat of my car. They were saying that the police could give me a ticket if he wasn't in the backseat. I have a utterly small car (a hyundai sonata) and a very large dog, so he cannot sit in the backseat. The seat in the back is a bench seat, and his paws slide off causing him to fall on the deck. The passenger seat is the only seat large enough to accomodate him safely and comfortably. He NEVER gets in the way of my driving, and I am always very cautious when driving with him. Can I really get a citation for this?

My dog always has a leash on in the car in case I need to grab him, but I have never actually had to. He's actually well behaved in the car.
I have a German Usher too (in Florida) and we always let her sit in the car. Nobody has ever found a problem with it before- I think the person you were talking to was probably just being obnoxious.
Car travel with Large Dog?
I am prevalent to be driving from Texas to New York next month with my dog, she is about 70 pounds. I can't just leave her in the back seat because she always tries to climb into the front and it is very distracting. I'm looking for a probity crate for her to travel in. I am also planning on going to the vet for a mild sedative for her. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!
I've never adapted to one of those doggy seatbelts before, is the dog able to lay down if she is in the seatbelt? Or does she have to sit up? I'm doing two 12 hour days and simply would like for her to be able to lay down...

If she is lanky, the crate will need to be tall enough to accommodate her so you want to be sure you can see over it. If she is not used to crates you will want to get her acclimated in a jiffy at home so she does not fret inside your car on your long trip.
You can get a hammock style seat protector in the back but you have need of to look for one that has a pass through for the seatbelt so that you can attach your dog to a harness and keep her in one place. Some dogs can jump over this kind of factor so it depends on how limber your dog is.

You will poverty to know if your dog gets motion sickness and adjust her eating if necessary. She should have a microchip and a collar with tag. I would take a fresh photo of her and her updated health records just in case. I would take enough of her food for a week or so extra only in case you cannot find it in your new place.
It helps to have a travel bowl and lots of plastic bags, paper towels, notably towels and cleaners just in case she gets muddy or sick. I always keep extra collars and leashes in the car as well and the dogs get chews and toys to conduct oneself with although they mostly just sleep.
Traveling with dogs can be great fun. You may want to look up your route online before you go and text up a list of dog parks and places to visit with your dog.
